Understanding the Importance of Planning and Goal Setting

Going through life without a plan can be a difficult task. As Brian Tracy says, “Having a plan without writing it out is like having a bunch of marble bouncing around in your head.” Planning and goal setting are essential elements in the quest for success. A plan can be the difference between success and failure. While having a goal will always help you keep your eyes on the prize.

The past few weeks for me have been pretty rough. I crashed and burned badly. I simply overwhelmed myself with taking on too much. The whole ordeal stopped me dead in my tracks. I had to take time to evaluate my efforts.

I knew what I wanted out of my efforts. I had a plan and I had a goal but I had neglected the most important rule. I forgot to write it out and stick to the plan. The goal has never changed. So there was no need to continue to reflect on the goal. But the plan changes often.

In the fast paced world that we live in, it is imperative that you continue to reassess your goals. Update them and follow them to the letter. This is where I missed the mark. I hadn’t taken any time to reevaluate the plan. I stop following the plan and simply work my way through the residual fumes of my plan. The bottom line is that I ran out of fumes and crashed. The marbles all rolled to one side and got jammed in the corner of my brain. I was frozen stiff with confusion and couldn’t figure out which way to go.

I knew that it was time to reorganize or rearrange some things in order to make progress.

Reorganizing allows you to get rid of the clutter and helps give you a clear picture of what is most important to you. The decision does not have to be a difficult one. It just has to be one that will allow you an opportunity to expand your territory. It has been said that your tomorrow is dictated by what you do today.

I have learned that sometimes the best answers can be found in the simplest solutions. A simple, well-thought out, well-executed plan beats a life of heartache and frustration. Taking the time to do things right will help avoid unnecessary obstacles that could otherwise hinder your progress.
